Hootsuite and Green Standards Turn 19 Tons of Corporate Waste into $19,515 in Charitable Donations

Vancouver, April 22, 2021— In celebration of International Earth Day, Hootsuite is proud to share the news of its partnership with Green Standards in a shared effort to reduce corporate waste. The global social media management company, which previously hosted two head office spaces in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, worked closely with the specialized environmental firm to responsibly redistribute surplus office furniture, equipment, and supplies after shifting to a distributed workforce at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are very grateful to Hootsuite’s Facilities team for constantly seeking green solutions when opportunities arise,” said Eva Taylor, Corporate Social Responsibility Director at Hootsuite. “Working with Green Standards gives us an effective way to support the environment, as well as important organizations within the Vancouver community, at the same time.”

Hootsuite and Green Standards made almost $20,000 of in-kind donations to support four Vancouver community organizations: Native Courtworker & Counselling Association of BC, Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver, Jewish Family Services of Vancouver, and the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. In 2020, Hootsuite partnered with the GVFB through the support of its employees and Vancouver Mayor, Kennedy Stewart, raising and donating $12,000 after the organization saw a dramatic rise in clients visiting its centres in the initial months of COVID-19.

Hootsuite’s partnership with Green Standards resulted in 19 tons of materials diverted from landfills and 65 tonnes of CO2 emissions reduced. These efforts are equal to reducing gasoline consumption by 7,253 gallons, growing 1,658 tree seedlings for 10 years, and offsetting electricity use from nine homes for one year.

“When an organization moves or renovates, much of the existing workplace—furniture, appliances, equipment and supplies—will end up in landfills,” said Green Standards President Trevor Langdon. “Ten million tons of these workplace assets end up in North American landfills each year. This contributes to carbon emissions and other forms of pollution while also locking away valuable materials which could be reused.”

Green Standards employs charitable donation, resale, and recycling to keep workplace furniture and equipment out of the landfill while generating positive local community impact.

“We’re very happy to be able to partner with forward-thinking companies like Hootsuite, who take their social responsibility and sustainability efforts seriously and continuously look for different ways they can help their community,” added Langdon. “We’re proud to help facilitate these donations to different nonprofits all across the Vancouver area.”

To further mark Earth Day 2021, Hootsuite is planting a tree for each of its employees—1,052 trees in total—through One Tree Planted. The trees are to be planted in Australia to help rebuild forests affected by 2020's catastrophic bushfires and restore native habitat vital for wildlife.
